A Message for First Responders

According to the Centre for Suicide Prevention – Suicide Prevention Toolkit (2015), one in five first responders are affected by trauma.

Imagine being an everyday hero – a firefighter, paramedic, police officer, or rescue unit – and having to experience being the first on the scene of a horrific accident, assault, suicide or murder... These events can be extremely traumatic to witness and be a part of. This trauma doesn't just fade away once you leave the scene. Often times the memories linger for weeks, months and years after, haunting you over and over again. You might even feel some blame for what took place, perhaps thinking you could have done something more to help prevent the victim's pain. These traumatic memories can often compound and become a major hinderance to a first responder, and over time morph into serious mental illness; depression, anxiety, extreme anger, isolation, post-traumatic stress disorder, and thoughts of suicide are common.

Here at STRC, we specialize in helping people process through traumatic events, and come out the other side healthier and happier. With our methods of EMDR and psychotherapy, we can assist you in breaking down the walls of fear, sadness and regret that are linked to those traumatic events, and help you be you again.

It's not too late. If you are suffering, or know someone who is, please reach out to us. We are here to help.
